Fireworks shot into the night sky from the roof of the Guildhall Shopping Centre as crowds looked on.
Families who attended the popular event said it had put them firmly in the Christmas spirit. Charmaine Campbell, aged 27 and Tim Goodwin, 29, attended with children Harry, nine, Lily, five and George, two.
Miss Campbell, of Doxey, said: "We've been to the Christmas lights switch-on before and this year's was really good too.
"It's definitely made us feel more Christmassy."
The evening switch-on followed a day of festive fun, including a Santa parade.
