Bereaved mother in campaign
The heartbroken mother of Mitchell Clifton today called for a crossing and speed humps to be installed on the busy road near where her son died.
The seven-year-old was killed last month after being struck by a security van at the car park entrance of a Co-op store in Staffordshire as he played on his scooter. Mother Michelle has already collected more than 1,000 names on a petition and is calling for safety improvements – as she paid tribute to her beloved son who was killed in Landywood Lane, Cheslyn Hay.
She said: "It's been such a hard time for me and my family. Mitchell was such an amazing little boy. We miss him so much.
"He had no fear and was full of energy. He had so many friends. Everyone wanted to be his friend."
Mitchell was knocked off his scooter in October. The Cheslyn Hay Primary pupil died at the scene.
After the tragedy, Miss Clifton, aged 38, went round the village, handing out petitions to shops and business.
She also launched an online petition called 'A mother's plea. Please help stop another tragedy happening in our village' which has 307 names on it.
Miss Clifton wants a proper crossing to be installed along Landywood Lane and also road humps at the entrance to the store.
She continued: "I don't want anyone going through the pain I've gone through.
"More shops and businesses have asked for copies of the petition so it will run on for a little while longer.
"I'd like to thank all the people who have supported me through this tough time."
Miss Clifton, who lives in High Street, is meeting with South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson this Friday to discuss her ideas on road safety measures. Mitchell had two brothers, Todd, 12, and Jamie, 21.
