300 homes completed at £65 million Walsall Waterfront development
It is one of Walsall's biggest regeneration projects, and now the multi-million pound Waterfront development is dominating the skyline.
More than 300 homes have now been completed in three blocks with the finishing touches now being put to the £65m scheme.
Work on the Waterfront South started way back in February 2010 and has gradually transformed the town centre near to the prestigious New Art Gallery.
Cannock-based developer Jessup has been behind the project which saw the first phase, 111-apartment block and 22 houses finished in Easter last year.
Another two sets of 82-block apartments have since been built with the final bits and pieces of the scheme now being finished. It is the first part of plans to transform the land near around Wolverhampton Street and comes as the new Premier Inn is due to open on Monday.
Chief executive Clive Jessup said: "Our Waterfront South development along with the new hotel shows that the whole Waterfront area is destined to become an important community and commercial asset, adding architectural quality and colour to Walsall's new town centre landscape. We are now almost complete on the final phase of our Waves apartments." The £10m Premier Inn is due to open next week to form the next phase of the regeneration of the town centre close to the Crown Wharf shopping centre.
The vision for the overall Walsall Waterfront is to transform 17 acres and create a picturesque waterside quarter. A specialist maternity centre for up to 1,000 women a year has already opened at the Homer Building in Charles Street.
The building was transformed into a birthing unit to ease growing pressure on Walsall Manor Hospital, which is having to accommodate more births. Elsewhere in the town the Manor Hospital has been redeveloped, a new College and Tesco supermarket have been built within the last few years.
