More than 200 sign petition after death of Cheslyn Hay boy, 7
More than 200 people have signed a petition calling for safety improvements on a road in Cheslyn Hay following the death of a seven-year-old boy.
Mitchell Clifton died last month after being struck by a van at the entrance to the car park at the Co-op store in Landywood Lane. His mother Michelle Clifton has since started an online petition.
Called 'A Mother's Plea, please help stop another tragedy happening in our village', the petition says traffic-calming measures are desperately needed along the stretch of road and especially at the Co-op entrance. A total of 239 people have signed it.
However, council bosses today revealed any improvements made would hinge on the recommendations of the coroner.
Staffordshire County Council's highways chief Mike Maryon said investigations had taken place to see if there was a history of accidents there but that was not the case.
He said: "At the moment the full details of the accident are not known. An inquest is pending and of course we will investigate further if the coroner recommends any further road safety measures."
The inquest was opened and adjourned on October 5.
District councillor Mac Harris said he had opposed the plans for the supermarket 10 years ago as he considered it to be a dangerous junction.
"It was a very unfortunate accident and my sympathies go to the family and also the van driver. I do believe the county council does need do look at the site very carefully," he said.
The driver of the white Mercedes Sprinter security van involved in the incident was a 45-year-old man from Cheshire.
