Two applications have been made to create a casino in Wolverhampton, it was revealed this afternoon, as the deadline for bids ran out.

Wolverhampton City Council announced it has been asked for permission to turn the former Dorchester night club site in Temple Street into a casino.

The owners of Wolverhampton Racecourse are competing for the licence, which can only be given to one of the bidders.

The racecourse bid would create the country's first combined "racino".

The applications will now be subject to public consultation until November 27.

Wolverhampton was one of only 16 authorities that were given the right to grant a Casino Premises Licence for a small casino, by Parliament in 2008. Establishing a small casino is seen as part of the overall regeneration of the city.

The casino will be allowed to have 80 slot machines and prizes of up to £4,000.

The project is expected to create 280 jobs if it goes to the racecourse. It has not been revealed who is behind the plans for the former Dorchester site.
