Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash, which happened near Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital.

The ambulance and Ford Fiesta, which were travelling in opposite directions, collided at a traffic light-controlled junction.

Inquiries were today ongoing to establish if either went through a red light before the impact. The two staff on the ambulance treated the woman and child from the car at the scene before all four were taken to New Cross Hospital for check ups and treatment.

The woman car driver suffered a foot injury but none of the others involved were thought to be badly hurt.

The crash happened at around 4.40pm on Saturday at the junction of Wolverhampton Road and Church Road, near to the hospital in Wednesfield.

Turning

The ambulance is believed to have been turning out of Church Road while the Fiesta is understood to have been travelling along Wolverhampton Road. Sections of both roads were closed for some time after the crash.

Two crews from Fallings Park fire station were called to help police at the scene.

A replacement ambulance dealt with the initial emergency call.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman John Hawker said: "We take any incident involving an emergency vehicle very seriously and will work closely with the police to establish exactly what happened."
