Cream of the club scene celebrated

Entertainers from across the region took to the stage at an awards ceremony celebrating the club scene's top talent.

Six acts scooped gongs from the Mid-Counties Entertainment Council at Coseley Working Mens Club last night and belted out hits spanning five decades.

All had been voted for by members of the council following shows over the last year.

The youngest winner was 16-year-old Kellie Magee, who was named best newcomer. The Halesowen College student lives in Coseley.

Stuart James, 35, won best male vocalist just months after returning home to Oldbury from performing in Memphis and Las Vegas.

The married father-of-two sang hits including Human by The Killers and said club audiences in the Black Country were "better than anywhere else".

Sisters Helen Deakin, 29, and Theresa Smith, 39, of Tipton, took to the stage as Helesa and scooped best duo.

Best female vocalist Sammie Lou Cooper belted out Shirley Bassey hits watched by her husband Vince.

The 32-year-old, of Brierley Hill, spent five years as a singer in Benidorm and worked at Joe Longthorne's bar in Blackpool.

Winners of best trio for the third year running were Beyond Words, made up of married couple Kay and John Davies and Bimal Jangra.

And Paul David, 39, who works as training ground manager at Walsall FC and assists the senior groundsman at the Bescot, won best all-round entertainer – his ninth award in 12 years.
