Taking the plunge with demolition of Bilston Leisure Centre's pool
Contractors have thrown themselves in at the deep end as diggers move in to flatten the old Bilston Leisure Centre.
Rubble is being used to fill up the old swimming pool at the Prouds Lane building which was closed last year ahead of the opening of the new £18.6 million Bert Williams Leisure Centre in the town.
Workers have been on site for the last few weeks and have now begun the demolition of the building. The work is being carried out by Birmingham based City Demolition on behalf of Wolverhampton City Council.
Site manager Darren Grainger said the firm had at least eight workers on site at any one time and sometimes up to 15 people have been working on the project.
Three excavators are also being used as part of the demolition work.
The 42-year-old from Wednesbury added that it had been an interesting job and said: "It is something a bit different. Work started on September 19 and we are hoping to have it finished by Christmas."
He said it had been quite a straightforward project although it had involved the removal of a bridge over the reception area which had required a lot of backfilling before it could be taken down.
He added: "The project is going very well so far."
The centre dated back to the 1960s and was a well-known Bilston landmark before its closure.
