Families hit by flood yet to go home

Some families whose houses were wrecked by flooding after a water pipe burst have still not been able to return home almost a year after it happened, it emerged today.

About 90 homes in Streetly were submerged in three feet of water when thousands of litres of water from Barr Beacon Reservoir gushed down through streets, wrecking homes and cars.

South Staffordshire Water Company admitted responsibility after a large water pipe in a field off Aldridge Road burst last November.

Craig and Zoe Bullock have only recently been able to return to their home in Whitethorn Crescent, but say a few families face spending a second Christmas out of their homes.

Mr Bullock whose home was one of the worst hit, said: "We haven't been back in long. We are pretty much sorted now but there are two or three people who are still out of their properties. We've had to get pretty much everything redone – new plumbing, plastering, carpets, furniture. It was a complete mess."

Weeks of wet weather earlier this year delayed repair work on many homes.

Houses in Aldridge Road, Limetree Road, Whitehorn Crescent, Yewtree Road, Cherrywood Road, Hazelwood Road, Foley Road West and Wood Lane were all affected by the flood, which South Staffordshire Water said was caused by casting flaws in a pipe.
