Cecil the Australian Huntsman – actually a female – is now in temporary digs at Bewdley's West Midland Safari Park.

Described by West Midland Safari Park wildlife director Bob Lawrence as "bigger than the average bathtub spider" – Cecil was taken to a vet's after turning up in Hay-on-Wye last week.

Sian Ward, whose aunts own The Granary cafe in Hay on Wye, captured the spider. Mr Lawrence said: "There had been some Australian backpackers in the cafe so it may have been brought in on their luggage."
