Four arrested over attempted murder of Lt Gen Kuldeep Singh Brar
Police were today questioning four people arrested in the Black Country in relation to the attempted murder of an Indian General in central London.
A 33-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman were detained in Wolverhampton, and two men, aged 34 and 25, were held after the car they were travelling in was stopped in West Bromwich.
The arrests come after a gang of four people attacked Lt Gen Kuldeep Singh Brar as he walked in Old Quebec Street near Marble Arch, slashing his neck on Sunday night.
The incident happened as the 78-year-old walked with his wife at 10.40pm. The gang then fled on foot towards Oxford Street.
He was taken to hospital but has been discharged.
Detectives said today they wanted to speak to passers-by who helped Mr Brar following the attack.
The three people arrested are being held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder. They were today being questioned by detectives in London.
Lt Gen Brar, who commanded Operation Blue Star to clear Sikh militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar in 1984, was attacked by four bearded men in what he and other Sikh groups claimed was a revenge attack. He was held by two of the men while a third tried to cut his throat.
Several Sikh organisations, including the Siromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee which manages the Golden Temple, have declined to condemn the attempt on his life and said it reflected the hatred and desire for revenge many Sikhs still feel for his role in the assault which left just under 500 people dead.
