New Cross Hospital parking plan plea

Resident-only parking schemes and double yellow lines are being proposed by a councillor to ease parking problems caused by new charges at New Cross Hospital.

Angry residents living near to the hospital in Wolverhampton say controversial parking charges for staff are causing chaos on nearby roads. Workers at the hospital now have to fork out up to £5 a week or £21 a month to leave their cars on-site during their shifts. The new charges started this week and staff had previously been allowed to park for free.

Heath Town Councillor Milkinder Jaspal said he has been receiving complaints from residents, who have sent him photographs of examples of inconsiderate parking.

"I've seen evidence of cars being parked in front of residents' driveways so they are blocked in.

"In streets that are very narrow, there are concerns refuse vehicles and the emergency services will not be able to get through because of the way people are parking," he explained.

"What I am proposing to the council is for residential parking schemes and double yellow lines along certain roads to be introduced. I strongly believe that any costs incurred should not be imposed on the residents because it is not their fault, but should be met by New Cross Hospital."

Councillor Jaspal today urged residents to continue sending him evidence of inconsiderate parking so he can use that in discussions with city council officers.

Last month, hospital bosses doubled the cost of short-stay parking and axed free disabled parking, sparking anger from residents who claim the roads are already blocked with visitors leaving their cars to avoid the parking fees.
