Homes are hit by pipe damage

Around 1,000 homes and businesses lost their water supply when workers at a new £50 million Tesco development in the Black Country damaged a pipe.

Contractors at the Crown Centre in Stourbridge damaged the pipe as part of excavation work on the site ahead of the new supermarket being built.

Properties were affected throughout the town, and stretching towards Norton and Enville, from about 3pm yesterday.

The supply was back on at all properties within an hour after Severn Trent diverted water from another network. Severn Trent spokeswoman Grace Marren said: "At approximately 3pm, contractors working in Market Street, Stourbridge damaged a Severn Trent Water pipe, which affected water supply for our customers.

"We managed to restore water for all properties in the area whilst we completed repairs to the damaged section of pipe.

"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this has caused." She added: "The pipe that was damaged was outside the Tesco site. We got out quickly to investigate and divert the supply from another network."
