Rachel Biggs, aged 29, is warning other pet owners to be on their guard after three-year-old Smudge was targeted by thugs. She found the pet limping across her drive in High Park Road, Halesowen, when she returned home from work. When the cat was examined by vets they found a pellet lodged in its right leg, and Miss Biggs had to pay £450 for it to be removed.

Miss Biggs, who also has a one-year-old Corgi called Murphy, said: "It makes you wonder, if they would shoot an innocent animal, would they shoot a child?

"I'm worried about it happening again."

Smudge was targeted last Thursday and currently has stitches in his leg.

Miss Biggs, a teacher at Haybridge High School in Hagley, added: "I am horrified that this has happened."
