Car is left marooned as floods hit region

[gallery] Floating with only its windscreen visible above the surface, a car became marooned in around three feet of water along a Black Country road today after a fortnight's worth of rain fell in just six hours.

It came as torrential downpours hit the region, with around an inch of rain falling in the first six hours of the morning – the same amount usually expected in two weeks at this time of year. A further two inches was predicted to fall throughout the day and overnight.

Furnace Grange Road in Trescott, near Wolverhampton, was closed off by police after the grey saloon car became trapped, almost completely submerged in the muddy waters.

Its driver managed to escape the vehicle, which was today left abandoned.

One passer-by said: "There was a police car blocking the entrance to the road and fire service tape all the way round to stop people going down there.

"But some drivers were still turning off the Compton Road and then having to turn around and go back - I'm sure that if the tape wasn't there some people would have chanced it.

Notorious

"It has been raining all night and everyone knows it floods there - I don't know why people would even try."

It is the third time so far this year that the notorious stretch of road at Trescott has flooded, leaving drivers forced to find an alternative route. In April, a plumber was forced to climb onto the roof of his van after becoming stranded in the ford. And a blue Mercedes had to be rescued by fire crews after waters rose again in June. The Met Office issued an amber severe weather warning – the second highest – in the early hours of today after a band of bad weather struck the region.
