The £50,000 programme of improvements includes repairs to the flagpole, new plaques installed and part of the monument illuminated.

The Queen Street structure is the first to be revamped after Walsall Council announced all mounments will be restored in the coming years. Measures are being put in place to deter metal thieves.

Darlaston South councillor Chris Bott has helped to lead the campaign.

She said: "Being born and bred in Moxley I have passed this cenotaph over a number of years and it has badly needed some restoration. I am pleased I have been in a position to help get funding."

Residents in Moxley have helped choose the design of the new brickwork, fencing, gates, railings and benches.

Emblems of poppies will be added to the gates and fencing.

The emblem for Moxley will also be put at both ends of the memorial and illuminated at night.
