English Heritage today slammed plans to demolish the historic Dudley Hippodrome.

The organisation, which protects historic landmarks, said the proposal would also harm the setting of Dudley Castle.

It comes after council bosses revealed plans to knock down the former theatre-turned bingo hall and create a 120-space car park.

English Heritage is now backing campaigners fighting to save the building from the bulldozers. Inspector of ancient monuments Ian George claimed the demolition of the theatre would "neither preserve nor enhance the character or appearance" of Dudley town centre.

"It also risks harming the setting of the nationally important Dudley Castle," he said.

Campaigners from the Friends of Dudley Hippodrome today welcomed the support.

Leader Geoff Fitzpatrick said: "I think this news is very positive for the campaign and recognises this is a significant building for Dudley."
