New homes are being sought for dozens of cats after a surge in the number being abandoned across Walsall and Cannock.

The RSPCA is looking for owners after 24 pets were recovered from the likes of dumped boxes and in bins around the region.

They are currently being looked after at Common Farm Cattery in Hednesford and an open day for interested parties was held at the weekend.

It costs the charity £4 a day for the cats to be cared for and they are usually kept for a minimum of three weeks to ensure they are healthy and vaccinated. RSPCA welfare co-ordinator Becky Weeks said there had been an increase in abandoned animals in recent weeks and the charity is now looking to find new homes for them.

"Normally we have about eight cats," she said. "We have currently got a lot of kittens between eight to 12 weeks old."
