Two busy routes and the M6 were affected by the series of smashes.

In one, a car flipped on to its side on a main road in Walsall. Sutton Road was blocked for around an hour after a Vauxhall Vectra flipped on to its roof.

Traffic backed up to the Arboretum Island after the crash at around 5.10pm yesterday and a 43-year-old man was treated for minor injuries.

Part of the M6 was closed during the evening rush hour by the accident on the southbound carriageway between junction nine for Wednesbury and junction eight for the M5 interchange at 5.42pm yesterday.

Two vehicles collided leaving hundreds of motorists in gridlocked traffic before the motorway was fully reopened at 7.48pm. Even as it was reopened, drivers still faced one-hour delays going back to junction 10a for Essington for some time.

In a separate crash, a car overturned on a main route in Staffordshire. Police were called to Pottal Pool Road in Penkridge following a collision between a Vauxhall Corsa and Ford KA.

The Ford KA had flipped on to its side but nobody was injured in the crash at around 5.15pm yesterday.

Steve Parry, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "The patient was out of the vehicle already and we did not take anybody to hospital. "
