Two new leisure centres will be created and swimming baths improved under a shake-up being considered by Walsall Council chiefs.

The existing Bloxwich and Oak Park centres will be replaced.

And Darlaston baths will be revamped under new proposals by leisure bosses.

It follows a review of leisure in the borough amid concerns of "ageing" facilities and low levels of adult physical activity.

Firm proposals are due to be considered by the decision-making Walsall Council cabinet in the coming months.

A new management model is also being drawn up by creating a social enterprise or trust. The review comes after Willenhall Leisure Centre was closed under budget cuts two years ago.

Council leader Mike Bird said: "We recognise that our residents need to have good quality, well designed and attractive leisure facilities. The council is keen to maintain and improve the health and well-being of its residents. This will help people and families become happier, fitter, healthier and more able to work and play.

"Proposals under consideration include replacing the leisure centres at Oak Park and Bloxwich alongside improvements at Darlaston Swimming Pool.
