A young boy is fighting for his life after being run over by a van in Halesowen. The seven-year-old was found to have suffered crush injuries.

Paramedics arrived at Whitefriars Drive cul-de-sac at 7.10pm yesterday.

Police said today that a Vauxhall Vivaro had been in collision with the boy while it was reversing.

Paramedics treated the boy at the scene and the air ambulance from Staffordshire landed nearby.

The youngster, who has not been identified, was immobilised using a neck collar, spinal board and pelvic splint.

He was then airlifted to the Birmingham Children's Hospital where he was today in a critical but stable condition.

Police sealed off the street while crash investigators made enquiries. The road remained closed until around 10 last night.

Police said their investigation was continuing today. No arrests have been made in connection with the accident.

Insp Mark Watkins said: "We are appealing for any witnesses to come forward who have yet to speak to police. It appears the van had reversed and collided with the child.

However, we want to hear from anyone who may have information."

The police collision investigation unit can be contacted on 101.
