A supermarket being built in Staffordshire is to open in November. The former Bridge Cross Working Men's Club in Burntwood was bulldozed to make way for an Aldi store.

Work is under way at the site in Bridge Cross Road at Sankey's Corner, and the German firm has announced it will open on November 22.

The 800 sq ft store with a 67-space car park was approved a year ago despite more than 200 objections from residents. A petition was organised opposing the scheme.

A revised bid focussing on amended road access and a new signal-operated crossing on the Milestone Way arm of Cannock Road and Bridge Cross Road was submitted. It also pledged that vehicles would be able to gain access from both directions in Milestone Way.

Despite receiving 22 letters of support for the new scheme and two objections, the council threw it out.

But many residents are looking forward to the new supermarket. Among them is district and town councillor Steve Taylor, who has been watching the building go up but said the firm should have used energy-saving technology.
