The view of Staffordshire MP Aidan Burley who called Danny Boyle's Olympic opening ceremony "multicultural leftie crap" were branded as "idiotic" by Prime Minister David Cameron today.
Cannock Chase MP Burley, who was forced to quit as a ministerial aide after attending a Nazi-themed stag do last year, delivered the barb on Twitter during the £27 million show at the Olympic Stadium on Friday.
Mr Cameron, speaking to the BBC at the Olympic Park, said: "I did once say something about people who use Twitter, particularly politicians, and I think in this case I was absolutely spot on.
"I think what he said was completely wrong. It was an idiotic thing to say."
Mr Cameron said: "People would have looked at that ceremony and said, 'of course there are some things in Britain they have left out that I might like in', but we all cannot be the art director of the Olympic Games opening ceremony.
"I thought it was a brilliant effort to bring it together, our past, our future and the vibrancy of the country and the incredible contribution."
On Friday Mr Burley tweeted: "The most leftie opening ceremony I have ever seen - more than Beijing, the capital of a communist state! Welfare tribute next?"
Shortly afterwards he added: "Thank God the athletes have arrived! Now we can move on from leftie multicultural crap. Bring back red arrows, Shakespeare and the Stones."
After a barrage of abuse on the social network, he tweeted: "Seems my tweet has been misunderstood. I was talking about the way it was handled in the show, not multiculturalism itself."
Cannock's former Aston Villa footballer Stan Collymore tweeted that Mr Burley was a "fool".
