The hugely popular Wednesbury Carnival, which had been due to take place this Saturday, has been cancelled due to the bad weather. The event at Brunswick Park has been running for over 40 years.

It is the latest blow for the park in Brunswick Park Road, which had its Queen's Jubilee celebrations cancelled last month due to the bad weather conditions.

Carnival co-ordinator Michael Middleton, also a member of the Rotary Club, said: "It's very disappointing for us because of all the hard work to make it a success in the first place.

"And now we've lost on it for the whole year because we won't be able to re-schedule. I'm gutted."

Organisers had put months of effort into booking a host of different types of entertainment for the flagship event, including Polish and Bhangra dancers.

A gun carriage display from navy cadets and the Karate Kai team from West Bromwich had also been reserved.

It has been due to be the 43rd annual event featuring the usual array of go-karting, a fun fair, entertainment from Punch and Judy plus live bands and 44 different stalls.

More than a thousand people had packed into the park last year – when the event enjoyed sunshine.
