They came in their thousands wearing wigs, tutus and bunny ears. The County Showground in Stafford was a sea of pink as more than 2,000 women came to take part in Race for Life.

And the rain stayed off long enough for runners and walkers of all ages to complete the 5k course.

Race organisers said the Stafford event would raise £98,000 for Cancer Research UK.

The race was preceded by a minute's silence in memory of those who had died from cancer.

Running was Denise Ayre, aged 49, of Arch Street in Rugeley. She has been in remission since having breast cancer 10 years ago. Ms Ayre, an office administrator, said: "It's great to get together and take part. This is my first time doing it – I've been going jogging four times a week to prepare for this."

First home in 20 min 59 seconds was Stafford Harriers member Stephanie Clayton. The 34-year-old council worker from Penkridge said: "It's important to take part in these events and raise money."
