Protests over Cannock Chase bridge plan
This is the first look at a proposed two-lane £3 million bridge over a dangerous level crossing in Cannock Chase which could take up to 1,000 cyclists a day as well as horses and walkers.
This is the first look at a proposed two-lane £3 million bridge over a dangerous level crossing in Cannock Chase which could take up to 1,000 cyclists a day as well as horses and walkers.
But protesters say it is "too ugly" to be placed in the picturesque forest setting. Plans have just been submitted for the covered structure at Moors Gorse, off Marquis Drive.
The chosen design is a green bridge to blend in with the surroundings. A steel arch, including ramps, which would have been the simplest to build and taken up less room, was considered too "alien" for the setting. Instead Network Rail is seeking permission for the 17ft high bridge with grassed earth ramps on either side of the Rugeley to Hednesford railway track. A fence will screen users.
A safer crossing has become necessary because of the introduction two years ago of a 15-mile mountain bike trail through the forest which has boosted cyclists to more than 3,000 at weekends.
The existing level crossing is a designated public footpath and bridleway across the rail line but was not designed for the number of people who now use it. Network Rail says there has been an increase in accidents and near-misses at the spot, either from users misjudging the speed or direction of an approaching rain, failing to spot a second train or crossing when the lights are red.
The green bridge is the preferred of six options but residents are opposed to the structure which they say will overlook their gardens.
Mother-of-two Wendy Emery, of Marquis Drive, said: "It's ugly. This is an area of outstanding beauty and this plan is out of keeping with the surroundings.
"The ramps are too high and the fencing looks like a corral to keep us in."
The residents plan to lodge an objection with Cannock Chase Council.
