Surprise send-off for gymnast Kristian Thomas

An Olympic gymnast was given a surprise send-off from his Black Country home as he headed off to compete in the summer games.

More than 20 relatives of Kristian Thomas flocked to his home in Silverton Way, Wednesfield.

The current English gymnastics champion joined Earls Gymnastics Club in Halesowen at the age of five and 18 years on is now preparing for his biggest ever competition.

The 23-year-old's first appearance at the Games will be on July 28, when proud parents Catherine and Peter will be watching.

The former St Edmund's School pupil said:?"I was over the moon to be picked for the Games.

"I knew nothing about this party but it was a nice surprise."

His mother Catherine, a midwife, said it was a nervous time for the family. She said: "We're so glad we've got tickets to watch him. We are so proud of him."
