Friends of murdered businessman Tom Kirwan today paid tribute to him as a "sweetheart" who would not be forgotten.

The 23-year-old was stabbed during a fight outside the Uberra Club, off Wednesfield Road, Wolverhampton, early yesterday and later died from his injuries.

Many friends of the avid Wolves fan spent yesterday in Wolverhampton city centre paying tribute to Mr Kirwan, with some having their Wolves shirts covered with the message "RIP Tom".

Meanwhile, many turned to social network websites to share their grief and talk of their memories of Mr Kirwan, who had recently bought his first house and was due to get married next year. Friends of the former St Edmund's Catholic School pupil started laying floral tributes on railings near to the scene bearing messages of condolence.

A Wolves shirt signed by friends was also draped over the railing in memory Mr Kirwan, who was managing director of Wolverhampton-based JK Amusements Ltd.

Shrewsbury Town defender Connor Goldson, who is from Wolverhampton, said on Twitter: "RIP Tom Kirwan, a friend who I grew up with. Thoughts and condolences are with his family."

Sophie Williams wrote on Twitter: "RIP Tom Kirwan. Only twenty three years of age. Goodnight sweetheart!"

And James Pearson tweeted: "RIP Tom Kirwan. Hope they catch the horrible people that committed such an awful crime. Gone but never forgotten."

Detectives hunting the killer said they were called to "a serious disturbance" at the club and had arrived at the scene, along with paramedics, to find Mr Kirwan with serious injuries.

Anyone with information about the incident can call police on 101.
