Motorists travelling between Wolverhampton and Dudley faced miles of tailbacks, with slow-moving traffic stretching back to the Ring Road from the scene of the crash, at the junction of Mount Road, Lanesfield, and the A4123.

The 47-year-old motorcyclist was thrown from his white bike after being hit by a silver Vauxhall Vectra, shortly after 5.15pm yesterday. Both sides of the A4123 were closed while the air ambulance landed and officers carried out crash investigations.

The motorcyclist, named locally as Andrew Cox, was airlifted to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment with serious leg and abdominal injuries.

Diversions along Dovedale Road and Spring Road were put in place to help alleviate the congestion.

Driver Jarrod Williams, aged 22, was caught up in the chaos.

"You could see the biker lying in the road – he looked quite badly injured," he said.

"The traffic was backed up all the way into Wolverhampton – I called my colleagues at work to warn them and they said they were on the Ring Road and it was bad."

Two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance attended the scene, along with fire crews from Bilston and Dudley.

Residents today demanded action at the notorious accident blackspot.
