A 70-bedroom hotel, 165 homes, a supermarket and office complex will be built at a South Staffordshire industrial estate, creating dozens of new jobs, under new plans unveiled by developers today.

The mini village, which would include a 28,500sq ft supermarket complete with a petrol filling station, would be built off the main A449 through Penkridge, at the Lyne Hill Industrial Estate.

The proposals are a scaled-back version of previous plans, which included a much larger 44,500sq ft supermarket – although developers Northcreek Estates have increased the number of houses earmarked for the site up from 150.

A total of 551 people lodged objections to the original blueprint for the site, claiming they would have "destroyed" Penkridge and affected local businesses.

Stafford MP Jeremy Lefroy said he wanted to see a use for the site which complemented the village.

"It is a very strategic site for Penkridge. Ideally I would like to see some manufacturing or industrial use there," he said.

"Anything that happens there has got to take into account the necessity of maintaining small businesses." Agent for the plans John Williams was today unavailable for comment.
