A family of ducks greeted drivers in Walsall today as they went for an early-morning waddle around the town centre.

The mother duck and her seven ducklings were spied leaving Walsall Arboretum and making their way down busy Lichfield Street, catching the attention of passing drivers and commuters.

The birds appeared to be a little bit lost as they walked in a line around the outside perimeters of the park trying to find their way back in.

After waddling around for a while while the morning traffic buzzed past, the protective mother duck eventually led her flock back through the park's Clocktower entrance, squeezing under the gates back to their safe haven.

Passers-by said it was an unusual sight to see along the towns busy ring road, as many drivers slowed to look at them.

One driver said: "Usually you see parents and their children heading to school, not a duck and her ducklings. It was a strange thing to see, especially in the middle of the town centre."

Walsall Arboretum is home to scores of ducks and geese, which all live around Hatherton Lake. The 80-acre park is in the midst of a £7.6 million revamp.
