A cat has been rescued after falling and impaling himself on rusty metal railings in a Wolverhampton garden.

The creature was found screaming in agony at the bottom of a garden in Lyndhurst Road, Penn Fields, with the metal spike going right through his body.

The cat – nicknamed Spikey by RSPCA inspectors – now faces potentially losing his leg but is otherwise making "excellent progress", according to vets.

RSPCA inspector Dawn Burrell said vets sedated him and pulled him from the railings before rushing him off to have an emergency operation on the wound. "Spikey was a pitiful sight and was very obviously in great pain when found," she said.

"It is not known at this stage if he will lose his leg due to internal injuries, but as each days passes Spikey's long term future is looking brighter."

Spikey has now been transferred to Walker and Wikeley Vets in Telford, and underwent another operation on June 15 – three days after he was found.

Anyone who thinks they know who owns Spikey should call 0300 1234 999.
