The 13ft tall Midland Metro bridge has long been an accident blackspot due to its height – and has seen more than 20 lorry crashes in six years.

The driver was treated by paramedics after the smash yesterday at around 2.20pm but his injuries were not serious.

No other vehicles were involved.

The road had to be closed for a time while the police made the area safe.

West Midlands Police spokesman Lee Page said: "The lorry hit a tram bridge and then a tree.

"It shed a lot of cereal boxes."

The lorry being driven belonged to Market Drayton-based firm Culina Logistics Limited.

Spokeswoman Debbie Hutt said: "The driver is fine. He was one of our agency workers. He was shook up but unhurt.

"It has been more an inconvenience than anything.

"We are investigating the circumstances of the crash."

Police remained at the scene until around 6pm.

Meanwhile a lorry shed its load of breeze blocks onto a busy roundabout near the M6 Toll in Cannock today.

It happened on Watling Street near to junction T7 but was cleared before the main rush hour traffic from 7am.
