A Wordsley school closed today so that pupils and staff could pay their respects at the funeral of an eight-year-old pupil who died hours after an asthma attack.

Among a group of schoolmates of Owen Jeremy attending the funeral was one who was expected to give his own tribute to the boy who loved sport and super heroes.

All 40 teachers at Fairhaven Primary School as well as some pupils and parents were attending Gornal Wood Crematorium.

Headteacher Dave Rowe was among five people paying tributes to Owen, who had passed his 50m swimming badge just a day before he died. Mr Rowe was reading out a poem about Owen written by another member of staff.

"The poem epitomises Owen," said Mr Rowe.

"One of our eight-year-olds is also due to make his own tribute to Owen, which is brave for a lad of that age.

"This is a very sad day."

Owen, of Primrose Hill, Wordsley, died on May 31.
