A cement mixer toppled on to its side in Wolverhampton, causing headaches for rush-hour drivers.

The accident in Wolverhampton happened outside the city's Swimming and Fitness Centre in Wednesfield. Police, fire and paramedic crews were called to the scene at 4.40pm yesterday.

No other vehicle was involved in the accident but the driver of the lorry was taken to New Cross Hospital for a check-up.

Motorists heading along the busy road had to slow down to squeeze past the vehicle, resulting in tailbacks. West Midlands Police spokeswoman Deb Edmonds said officers did not have to close Planetary Road fully.

It came a few hours after a lorry on the M6 shed its load of empty glass bottles, sparking huge queues for drivers and a six-hour clean-up operation.

The incident on the M6 happened southbound between junction 14 for Stafford north and 13 Stafford.
