A high-flying RAF cadet has beaten around 50,000 rivals to be awarded the prestigious Dacre sword for excellence.

Luke Horrobin, aged 19, was presented with the award at Beacon Barracks, MoD Stafford, last night in front of proud family and friends.

The accolade is for cadets who excel in everything and stand out from all comrades nationwide.

Cadet Warrant Officer Horrobin, of 425 Aldridge Squadron - Air Training Corps, was handed the award by the most senior female in the UK armed forces, Commandant of the Air Cadets, Air Commodore Barbara Cooper.

He is also one of few cadets to fly solo, as well as achieve all B-techs available to volunteers, and achieving his Gold Duke of Edinburgh award and recently winning the International Air Cadet competition.

WO Horrobin, of Leighswood Road, Aldridge, is Walsall schools' javelin and shotput champion.

His proud father Kevin, who runs Senior Vehicle Rental in Barr Beacon, said: "I'm over the moon."
