The largest Post Office in West Bromwich has closed down unexpectedly, leaving residents bewildered and frustrated.

The Post Office on High Street next to the large Morrisons supermarket was closed suddenly, and customers who use it to collect pensions, buy tax discs and foreign currency are being forced to go elsewhere.

Post Office bosses have now said they are working hard to find an alternative site in the town to offer the service.

Currently a security guard is spending his day outside the premises directing people to the nearest Post Office which is on Birmingham Road, half a mile away. To buy car tax, customers are having to travel two miles to the Dudley Port post office.

William Webb, aged 79 who turned up to use the Post Office yesterday said: "It's just a big inconvenience. I had wanted to use it while I was in town, and now I will have to go down to the Stone Cross one."

Post Office spokeswoman Gabrielle O'Gara said it had been closed for more than a week and apologised to customers for any inconvenience.

She said: "We are committed to re-establishing a Post Office service in High Street as soon as possible and are working hard to do so."
