Wolverhampton city centre's landmark Varsity bar will close by the end of next month as the University of Wolverhampton closes in on a deal to take over the building, it was announced today.

Bosses at the university today confirmed they have submitted an official offer for the popular live music venue and expect the deal to be signed off by the end of June.

They hope work could then start on its transformation so it could be complete in time for graduation ceremonies in September.

University spokesman James Allen said a consultation would be launched with staff and students over the future of the building once the contracts had been exchanged.
