A man was taken to hospital with serious injuries after falling 3ft down a roadworks trench in Rowley Regis.

The man was trapped down the hole in Oldbury Road, near Jeffrey Road, for about 40 minutes.

Paramedics and emergency doctors were called to the scene at 3.50pm yesterday and gave the injured man treatment before he was taken to hospital.

Protective barriers do surround the trench, which has been dug for utility work, as well as a similar sized hole on the opposite side of the road.

Ambulance service spokesman John Hawker said the man, believed to be in his 60s, suffered serious facial, neck and chest injuries.

He received treatment at the scene and was taken by ambulance to the major trauma unit at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital. "The trauma doctor from the air ambulance travelled on board the ambulance," Mr Hawker added.
