Driver dies as 4x4 overturns on Staffordshire road

A man has died after the 4x4 he was driving overturned on a Staffordshire road and landed in a ditch.

A woman passenger was airlifted to hospital after escaping with minor head and arm injuries.

Emergency crews were called to Brindley Road in Hednesford, near to Cannock Chase.

Two Midlands Air Ambulances from Cosford and Staffordshire, police and four fire crews attended the scene but the driver was confirmed dead by a trauma doctor aboard one of the helicopters.

The passenger, in her 20s, was cut free from the Mitsubishi Shogun, which had fallen into a three-foot deep ditch.

West Midlands Ambulance spokesman Chris Kowalik said the injured woman had suffered minor head pain and cuts to her arms.

She was treated at the scene before being flown to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire for checks.

Fire crews from Cannock, Penkridge and Stafford helped to release the pair. Police officers closed the road while the rescue operation took place.

The accident happened at 11.20am yesterday.

Police have not yet named the crash victims.
