The sun was shining for runners as they pulled on their trainers to take part in a long-standing Midland race.

Around 120 keen runners from clubs around the region took part in the Cobra Classic 10k from the Old Halesonians sports ground, in Wassell Grove, near Hagley, at the weekend.

Cobra Running and Triathlon Club hosted the event, and organisers said that they were delighted with the turnout.

Dozens of youngsters and their families also took part in a mini fun run which was held just before the main event.

Among them was Cobra club member Scott Taylor who took his daughter Orlaith, aged five, and six-year-old son Noah to the event. "I thought it would be good event to take part in, and the weather is good, so I bought the kids down with me," he said.

Members of Halesowen Athletics and Cycling Club lined up at the start ready for the off alongside members of other clubs including Dudley Kingswinford.

Runner Caroline Lambert, 44, said: "We always try to support our local races, and this is one of the good ones. The weather is good, it is tough though."

They strode out from the grounds at 10.30am on the route which takes in the scenic countryside around Hagley and Halesowen.

Winner of the men's race was Daniel Robinson of Birmingham Running and Triathlon Club in 36.22mins with Stourbridge Running Club member Louise Collins the first woman home in a time of 43.42mins. Fun run winner was Lily Higgins, 12, from Stourbridge, who is a member of Halesowen Athletics and Cycling Club.

Race director Chris Pearson said: "We have had a good turnout this year, and we are pleased so many come out to support the race."
