The parents of a Black Country girl killed on her sixth birthday have been overwhelmed by a huge wave of sympathy following the road accident.

Daisy May Brooks was hit by a car outside the family's home in Warstones Drive, Penn, Wolverhampton, shortly after her birthday party on Saturday.

Her parents Helen Brooks, aged 34, and 37-year-old butcher Simon Davis said today: "We are amazed at how much one little girl touched so many people's hearts.

"We do not know half the people that have been leaving flowers and mementos outside our home. The couple who have three other children, Chelsea, 11, Liam, nine, and eight year old Hollie, added: "We would like to thank everybody for their support, family, friends all the staff at New Cross Hospital and the police officers."

"Daisy was funny, cheeky and always happy. She would always be singing around the home. Her death has left a gaping hole in our lives; the kids just want their little sister back."

Daisy was knocked over by a Honda Civic at 5.14pm on Saturday and died later at New Cross.

The driver of the car, who was deeply shocked, stopped at the scene of the accident. Witnesses said that she did what she could to help. Police inquiries continue into the cause and an inquest into the tragedy was due to open today at Smethwick.
