Snow hit parts of Staffordshire and the West Midlands today as the region continued to shiver through spring. Flurries hit Stone just before 7am and moved south.
Later Stafford, Wolverhampton and parts of Walsall were affected.
It followed a night of low but not freezing temperatures – at 39F(4C) – with a sudden turn in winds from the North Atlantic responsible for the snow.
It last snowed in England in May two years ago but that was further north in Tynside and the the fam-ously bracing seaside resort of Skegness
Any new bedding plants are likely to suffer in a possible widespread frost across much of the Midlands ton-ight and it could be another week before the weather warms up to anywhere near the seasonal norm.
Met office forecaster Helen Waite said it was likely to be colder tonight with temperatures dropping to 32F(0C) in rural spots, rising to around 37F(3C) in the cities and large towns.
She said: "It is unseasonal at the moment but it's very difficult to say whether individual events of weather like this is generally down to global warming. Certainly north westerly winds from Greenland and the North Atlantic were responsible for the cold turn, bringing the snow. The roads were too warm for it to settle."
