The driver of the silver Toyota had to be cut from his vehicle by fire crews.
Police closed both sides of the A449 Stourbridge Road close to Billy Buns Lane in Wombourne after the crash which happened at 7.15am.
The driver was airlifted to hospital after being freed.
Staffordshire Police spokesman Peter Bate said the lorry had been parked in a lay-by when the accident happened.
He said: "The car was in collision with a stationary lorry. The driver of the car has been seriously injured. We have shut both sides of the road for the time being."
Drivers were being diverted around the crash by police.
Motorists also faced almost two miles of tailbacks on the M54 near Wolverhampton today as a car crashed into the central reservation barrier. The crash happened at around 8am close to junction three at Albrighton and led to the outside lane being closed.
In Staffordshire, a motorist had to be freed by fire crews after his car crashed into a lamp post on the A38 Swinfen island just before 8pm yesterday.
