A Staffordshire family will be taking part in a solstice walk in a bid to raise £20,000 in memory of a much-loved mother.

Nicole Fletcher, Charlotte Wood and Jessica Goulden, from Cannock, are embarking on the nine-mile night-time stroll around Lichfield's streets, along with hundreds of women who want to support St Giles Hospice.

The trio of women will be spending June 23 from 10pm walking in memory of Maureen Wood.

The group of three hope the 2012 Solstice Walk will help them reach their fundraising target, while giving Nicole and Charlotte the chance to reflect on the life of their mother and Jessica the opportunity to remember her grandmother, Maureen, who was cared for at the hospice last year.

Nicole, aged 36 from Cannock, said: "The staff and volunteers at St Giles took such good care of mum – and our whole family – during her stay. We want to raise £20,000 for the charity, which is enough to fund the work of one St Giles' nurse for an entire year."

Maureen was diagnosed with a brain tumour in September 2011. Her health deteriorated quickly and she was admitted to the hospice two months later. She died in November of that year.

"Mum was only 57-years-old, so it was a massive shock to everyone when she became ill," added Nicole.
