A major road that was closed in a Staffordshire town causing months of traffic chaos is set to reopen at the end of the month, council bosses revealed today.

Victoria Street in Hednesford was closed in February as part of a £50 million regeneration of the town.

It shut to allow workers to install a new roundabout and divert services such as sewer and water drains under the new Tesco site.

The road is now due to be open by the end of May and buses started using a section of it again on Tuesday.

Glen Watson, economic development manager of Cannock Chase Council, said: "The construction is moving rapidly, Victoria Street is due to be reopened by the end of the month."

George Adamson, the leader of Cannock Chase Council, and the member for Hednesford Green Heath, welcomed the news.

He said: "They seem to be working really well. Tesco is still due to be up and running by Christmas."
