The raiders, who were using a low-load vehicle, were disturbed by a passerby and fled empty-handed in the direction of Wolverhampton.

A police cordon has been put around the building and two officers were standing guard this morning.

One of the front windows had been completely smashed and brickwork had been damaged.

The cash machine was lying half-way out of the empty window.

Glass and other debris such as window displays were scattered on the pavement.

Bus driver Bert Wilkins, 59, said: "I was shocked when I saw the damage."
