Part of the southbound carriageway of the motorway was closed temporarily during rush hour while the Midland Air Ambulance from Cosford was scrambled to the scene.

It landed on a grass verge near to junction 11 for Cannock, forcing traffic to be stopped.

A silver car is believed to have collided with the central reservation and the barrier on the edge of the carriageway.

Paramedics believe the driver, a man in his 40s, may have been taken unwell behind the wheel.

He had to be cut from the car by firefighters and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Walsall Manor Hospital by land ambulance.

He is not believed to have been seriously injured. West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Steve Parry said: "We treated a male in his 40s.

"He had become unwell at the wheel of his car and had hit the reservation barrier.

"He was taken checked over and taken to Walsall Manor Hospital."

Two temporary road closures were put in place while emergency services dealt with the crash scene.

One was to allow the air ambulance to land at around 8.15am, while the carriageway was closed for two minutes at 9.09am while the helicopter left the scene.

A closure which was put in place on one lane of the sliproad following the collision was lifted at 9.38am.

Jo Carroll, spokeswoman for the HIghways Agency, said: "The incident resulted in damage to both the central reservation barrier and also the barrier on the edge of the carriageway.

"An incident support unit has done some temporary repairs."
