Hundreds of pounds have been stolen from the bank accounts of customers using a cashpoint at a supermarket in Staffordshire.

Three people had between £100 and £1,000 taken from their accounts after using the cashpoint at Morrisons in Cannock.

School worker Jayne Mercer, aged 52, of Cannock, noticed on Sunday that £600 was missing from her account after using the machine in Mill Street.

"When I realised the money was missing I rang my bank Halifax straightaway," she said. "It was put back in within a couple of hours but it's never happened to me before. I think it's awful."

Peter Bate, spokesman for Staffordshire Police, said: "We received a report last Thursday that the cashpoint had been tampered with.

"Following this, we received further calls from people about their cards being cloned and money being withdrawn by a third party. These matters have been referred to the relevant banks for investigation."
