A cannabis factory worth up to £200,000 has been uncovered in an empty industrial unit in Staffordshire.

Almost 650 plants were discovered inside the derelict scrap metal premises off Landywood Lane, on the border of Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay.

The illegal growing operation where the electricity was bypassed was unearthed by officers yesterday afternoon.

They were forced to break into the secure unit with the help of firefighters at around 3.45pm and the plants were found inside.

There was hydroponic equipment used to help with the growing process. The plants, which can range in value between £200 to £300, were being cultivated in two separate growing operations.

Officers acted upon intelligence to raid the empty scrap metal building hidden away from the main road and away from many of the other businesses in the industrial area.

Forensics were also called to search the premises during the early evening. The plants were being taken away so they can be destroyed.

No-one has been arrested although inquiries are continuing. Pc Sean Hinsley, of Staffordshire police, said: "We do not tolerate any drug crimes and we are cracking down hard on dealers and growers."
